Accurate Description of Item
Early 20th Century Silver plated Filigree Cigarette Case
Appraiser Remarks
Generally anything made with silver will have markings to indicate the silver content, for example Sterling silver can have a numerical marking of "925" stamped on it, Sterling silver being 92.5% pure silver. Some silver will be stamped "800", meaning it has less silver content than Sterling, being 80% pure silver. European and British silver will have a series of stamps called "hallmarks", from which the maker, date of manufacture and country of origin can be determined.
Pieces without any markings are generally silverplated and sell for far less than the hallmarked or stamped ones, but nearly every filigree case like this we've seen has been at least 80% silver. In the current market these rarely sell for less than $150.00
