Re: Antique carved bone (1779-Colonel Rogers Clark)
Thats a very nice looking piece of scrimshaw, but hard to evaluate from pictures. Best to have this one evaluated in person by an expert. If it's reallyrics as old as it says that could have considerable value. Definitely don't sell without doing that first.
Re: Antique carved bone (1779-Colonel Rogers Clark)
It *is* a very nice looking piece. Unfortunately, it's a reproduction with minimal resale value (that and a larger piece of synthetic scrimshaw recently sold for $20 on eBay). The New Bedford Whaling Museum has it described on their "Fakeshaw" page as:
192.COLONEL ROGERS CLARKTooth, 4.5 inches (11.4 cm).[Manufacturer not identified.]Obverse: Bust portrait "Colonel Rogers Clark" in riband, "1779."Â Reverse: Flag, Union Jack quartered, 11 stripes; cannon and powder horn device; "1779."
So the downside is it's not an authentic piece of scrimshaw, but on the bright side, an old lady in Israel probably didn't help make whales endangered!
