A 17th century original oil portrait painting by Nicholaes Maes (Dutch, 1634-1693). This portrait of a gentleman on canvas reflects Maes early work, a style distinguished with deep glowing colors, learned while a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn, from approximately 1650-1653. Born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, Maes is a painter of portraits and genre scenes during the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for his simple sentimental genre scenes, although his later period in Antwerp reflects his focus on portraiture and a shift in style. Maes has a unique ability to portray distinct personalities and capture the subtleties of expression and character. His early work so closely resembled that of Rembrandt, that it is often attributed to Rembrandt. This 17th century portrait painting is signed by Maes on the lower right, and is mounted in a rustic carved wood frame. The painting is in very good condition without any damage or restoration.
