I Collect early VW Historical Items. I own a VW Commissary plate from 1940 which is one of a few known and was identified from a Museum in Germany.
This new find however, none of my serious early VW Collector friends in Europe have seen before. I found this one at an Auto flea market and the guy I bought it from purchased it in Ohio.
The VW Logo on the front, is consistant with the logo used right after the war from 1945 to sometimes as late as 1949. (the previous VW logo had "gear teeth" going around it exactly like the Nazi DAF Logo). The British took over the bombed out VW Plant in 1945 to build cars from salvaged parts and to get Germany up and working again. I say this as to explain that some VW items from that period were made (or printed) by the British.
This plate is not fancy, it's thick & heavy like a typical plate found in a Diner and has imperfections in the glaze when made. This Plate is printed (under the glaze) in green which is the same color as the Bausche-Weiden Logo, but did not not find this logo in Bauscher's design changes over the years. The VW Logo imprinted on the plate's front rim is printed in blue again under the glaze. The VW Logo's Ring however is not solid and has "breaks" around it as if to suggest it was stenciled on? I have searched to no avail to identntify the Makers Mark on this plate and to especially date it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.
