Antique or vintage Marked STERLING IND Log Holder with Made in Japan Sticker

Good morning,

I have recently acquired this intresting piece of collectible from a family member who wondered about its history and significance/ value.

I am completely at a loss at trying to figure out if it's truly a 'STERLING' item as it just seems too large... yet, it's marked STERLING IND. It does have a tiny sticker with the words, Made in Japan.

It appears to be a log holder or some kind. The weight is quite heavy and there is some rust and damage to the hinge (see photos) of the other metal.  If you can offer any advice, I would be so grateful.  Thank you!
