Accurate Description of Item
"Old Ivory" Late Victorian German Ceramic/Ivory Floral Dish with Golden Inlay
Appraiser Remarks
Based on the images and the size of this piece, it is actually a wash basin bowl, once part of a full washstand set that would have included a pitcher, soap dish, hair receiver, tooth brush holder and a chamber pot. Most are made of Ironstone pottery, though some are porcelain. You can test for porcelain by holding your bowl up to a bright light, if the light appears to glow through it it's porcelain, if the light is blocked it's ironstone or some other sort of eartenware pottery.
The marking on it we have no listing for, but country of origin markings such a "Germany" were not in common usage until after 1890,applied to comply with American trade tariff laws. Late Victorian Wash basin bowls like this on their own tend to have rather modest values with most selling at auction for under $75.00
