Accurate Description of Item
One Thonet Bentwood Art Deco Period Chair
Appraiser Remarks
Your chair is what's often referred to as a "Bentwood Thonet chair" after the fact the basic design and methods used in their construction were patented by Michael Thonet in 1842 and renewed for an additional 13 years in 1856. When the patent ran out many other firms produced their own lines of bentwood furniture.
This one, though we have no match for this one in our records, it does appear to be a genuine late 1920's to early 30's Thonet example, the address on the label matches that of the Thonet branch in New York from the late 1920's to about 1959.
The Art Deco Style was all the rage during the 20's and 30's with
chairs like this were used mainly in cafes, restaurants and theaters prior to World War Two (1939). Values vary for Thonet chairs depending type, style, vintage and most importantly, condition. In the current market we'd recommend a replacement value for a chair in comparable condition to yours in the $200.00- $300.00 range.
