Appraiser Remarks
The Mount Airy Mantel and Table Company was founded in 1895 by J. A. Yokley, J.C. Hollingsworth, C. R. Merritt, A. G. Trotter and E.H. Kochtitzky, Mount Airy Furniture, formerly on Factory Street, manufactured medium grade oak chamber suites, bedsteads, bureaus, dressers, tables, pie safes and desks. Through the years, they expanded to include dining room and occasional chairs and in 1966, it merged with the Mount Airy Chair Company which was formed in 1921 by Bruce and James Yokley. Mount Airy Chair manufactured drawing room and dining room chairs, dining room furniture and bedroom chairs. On June 9, 1997, the Mount Airy Furniture was completely destroyed by a fire.
The style of your suite is indeed what's referred to as "French Provincial", a simplified version of 18th Century Louis XV furniture. This style was extremely popular, produced during the turn of the 19th Century, the 1930's and again in the 1950's. Furniture of this style was produced by nearly every major North American furniture manufacturer, without a label determining a maker is difficult. The style is not as popular as it once was, but has most recently been revived as "French Country" and is still in production as both French Country and French Provincial. Currently values for comparable suites are quite modest, at auction we see them often go at auction for less than $500.00, we'd retail a comparable suite for less than $1800.00.
