Accurate Description of Item
One Pair of Late 19th Century Vulcanite Dentures
Appraiser Remarks
The discovery that vulcanite could be used to make dentures was made by Dr. John A. Cummings in Boston, who originally filed a notice in 1852 and completed application for a patent in 1855. Originally, the patent office refused his application, but he kept trying. It wasn’t until 1864 that a patent was finally issued by the Patent Office.
Acrylic dentures were a early 20th century development, vulcanite being the choice from the 1850's through the the 1930's. In terms of a more exact age and the sex this set were made for, it would require a physical examination. In terms of value there is not much demand for old dentures except from a very small group of collectors for Antique Dentistry or Medical items
