Belonged to my mother...sat on shelf for years

This beautiful glass bird was in my mother's collection and sat on a shelf for many years. We lost most of her belongings during Katrina, except for items that were high on shelves and in cabinets. The bird is in excellent condition.

Metal statue is a horse running but it is standing on a bird in flight. The statue is removable and leave the impression of the bird in the wooden base. The horse has weird elements on its head and tail.

My school teacher was retiring and gave each pupil a memento from the classroom. She gave me this little bronze bird. The teacher was from Poland and was about 80 years old. That was 35 years ago.

The little bird, which I presume is a peacock, is about 3 inches tall. Once the head comes off, the head turns into a pin, or dagger, or could be used to pierce something?? The tail also flips up and down. I have NO IDEA what it is for!! The head is a slightly worn from being "used" so many times. I am including some pictures. Can you please tell me what the little bird does?

Not sure what type bird or fowl this is. Looks quite old and has lots of petina and is somewhat heavy. The board it's mounted on is sort of rough, although not cracked or split. The right side view lower part of wing looks like a dent but is not dented.
