Long Description
From the research I've done online, I would describe this as a Gothic carved oak buffet. Â The top part of the buffet does attach, and all of the locks function with the key. Â I don't know much else other than the friend I got it from said that it was in their family for generations.

Re: Antique Gothic Carved Oak Buffet
Most of these tend to to date from the third quarter of the 19th Century, The style first being revived about 1840. A great many of them were produced in Belgium and England, values for them peaked back in the 1980's and have been in a decline since then. For examples in really good condition we'd retail one for abour $1000.00, but they often go for a thrid of that at auction.
Re: Antique Gothic Carved Oak Buffet
I have seen many online that are similar (I realize that subtleties could be a huge factor) that are selling for well over $3000. Â Why are those selling for so much more?
Re: Antique Gothic Carved Oak Buffet
What they list for and what they actually sell for on average varies considerably. A lot depends on the maker, those carrying a marking/label of a big name maker will list with much higher values Decorator Galleries than unmarked examples in general Antique shops. We pick up unmarked Gothic style sideboards at auction in the $350.00-700.00 range, it's rare we'd sell an unmarked one for over $1800.00.
